BEST CATTLE AREA IN EASTERN CAPE -
Location
The farm is situated west of the N10 and north of Cookhouse.
Size
It is 963ha in extent.
Description
The farm falls into what is known as the popular 'Smaldeel' belt. This region was rated in 1974, by the then Dept Agriculture, as the best overall cattle veld in the country with a few of the farms being the only ones in South Africa to be awarded an AAA rating. This farm can comfortably sustain its 1-6LSU rating. One of the primary reasons is that the undulating topography, fertile soils and higher rainfall, support an inordinately high variety of grass species.
Veld types
The lower lying areas are predominately Cenchrus Cillaris and digitaria Smutsi. As one climbs a bit higher, you go through a belt that is comprised largely of Pannicums and Setaria, and then higher still, the default grass is Themida Triandra. As you know, these grass species offer different seasonal palatability peaks. The Themedia is best utilized in Summer, with palatability tailing off as winter approaches. The Pannicums and Setaria are well utilized right through until June, with the Cenchrus being used right through the Winter. As a result one sees a natural altitude migration of grazers from the higher elevations in summer through to the lower regions in the late winter months.
Rainfall
The annual rainfall average is 420mm.
Game species
Kudu, bushbuck and mountain reedbuck etc.
Infrastructure
The farm is fully game fenced with a relatively new, 2.4m EC Nature Conservation high specification fence. In total there are 33ha of contoured lands with a total of 22ha of water rights. All irrigation is gravity fed, flood irrigation. This is going to prove a real future cost saver with rising power/pumping costs. The water allocation is part of the Orange/Fish river scheme which is by far the most stable and reliable supply in the province if not the country.
The water quota here is calculated at the scheduled allocation in ha x 12 000m3/annum. This, coupled to an annual rainfall average of 420mm, constitutes a conservative 160% of the requirement. The 22ha allocation is thus sufficient for the 33ha lands. Riparian water is drawn from the canal, with a borehole as a standby.
There is currently no house on the property.
Conclusion
All in all a very well rounded farming package. Somerset East is the closest main centre and home to Gill Colledge, an excellent school with a great reputation at both primary and secondary level. Servicing a large farming community, the town has all the farming equipment suppliers one needs. The closest city is Port Elizabeth at 170km away.
