More about the tranquil village:
At the end of the Gourits River lies a tranquil, seaside holiday town and part of the beautiful Western Cape - Garden Route. Ideal form those who need a break from the city life, but still within an hours drive to one.
Gourits was named after the Gouriqua Khoikhoi people that lived in the area. The Gourits River is the principal river in the southern Cape. The N2 national road and the railway line both cross the Gourits River over a gorge 65m deep and 75m wide. Both sides of the ravine are covered with aloes that look beautiful when they flower.
Gouritsmond is situated at the mouth of the Gourits River. It is centrally situated in between Cape Town and Knysna. This location makes it possible to visit a large number of popular tourist attractions within a day's trip. These include the famous Gourits bridge bungie, the Reins Nature Reserve and cities like, Cape Town, Mosselbay, Oudtshoorn and Knysna. The nearest airport is George (about 100 km, or 1 hour's driving).
Gouritsmond has a moderate climate with an average rain fall of 350 mm per year. 57% of the rain fals from April to September. The two primary wind directions are south west and south east. Temperature varies from 6 - 25 degrees Celcius in winter and 10 - 28 degrees Celcius in summer.
Fishing in the area is good and fish is abundant in the area. Famous fishing spots include "The Fisheries", "Bull Point" and "Kaap Vacca". Leervis, White Steenbras, Kob, Grunter, and Elf are found here. The Kabeljou will sometimes swim into the estuaries to feed on the Mullet. Gouritsmond is recommended for the powerboat fisherman and a launch ramp is available.
A walk along the beach front or on the rocks at low tide is a treat for the family. The swimming area is safe and there is a tidal pool along a rocky stretch of beach. Hiking trails are also available along the lagoon side.
Our fauna is very important to all living at Gouritsmond. Guinea Fowl, peasant and kiewiets are common visitors in our gardens. For early morning rises, a special treat of buck and rabbit are can be experienced. Tortoises enjoy the freedom of wandering in the roads. The abundance of bird life is an amazing experience.
Things to do:
200m from beach and plus minus 600m from river, fishing and swimming a must. Hiking, bird watching, scenic drives, wine tasting, game farms, shopping malls, casino, restaurants, shark (cage) diving, game farms and plenty more can be done in a day's outing. Organised tours and airport transfers are available.
