NAPIER RETIREMENT VILLAGE -
Napier Retirement Village is situated in the charming historical village of Napier which lies beneath the Soetmuisberg mountain range, less than two hours scenic drive from Cape Town. Tucked into a green valley, this typical Overberg country town full of character and old-world charm, offers true peace and tranquility in a unique rural setting, and is a safe-haven from the crime and grime of city life.
LOCATION
Situated on the top of a hill overlooking grazing livestock on open fields of barley and wheat the 'Ou Skool' ("Old School"), as the complex is fondly referred to by Napier residents, is an impressive old building with wooden floors, high ceilings and a rich history. It has been converted and lovingly restored to form the nucleus around which the Napier Retirement Village has been designed.
Built in 1907, the Ou Skool grew over its 70 years to accommodate over 300 children from neighbouring farms and towns including Stanford, Gansbaai and Hermanus. Renowned for its high academic standards and strict discipline, scholars from as far as Cape Town were enrolled here.
With breathtaking country views of wide, open spaces, undulating farmlands and hills, residents can relax in the comfort of complete security, with full healthcare services and a well-equipped, beautifully restored Victorian club house, while surrounded by a genuine kind-hearted and supportive community.
Aside from the delightful array of farm stalls, shops and restaurants in Napier, the area boasts a wealth of natural attractions. Africa's southernmost tip at Cape L'Agulhas, with its magical coastline of dramatic rock and pristine fynbos and rich maritime history, is a mere 30-minute drive away. Also close by is Arniston, the picturesque 200-year old fishing village with its warm Indian Ocean waters, historical buildings and abundant hiking trails. The expansive beaches and popular shopping centres of Hermanus is an hour's drive away. While closer to home, the De Hoop Coastal Nature Reserve is within easy driving distance on the outer reaches of Bredasdorp.
Aside from other larger settlements like Struisbaai, Greyton and Swellendam, the small missionary village of Elim, which has been declared a national monument in its entirety, is another easily accessible and enjoyable destination for a day's outing.
ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS
Napier Retirement Village offers several choices for the retired person, with a wide range of accommodation types at differing prices. It provides spacious homes for people wanting total independence, while offering smaller homes and apartments for those requiring more compact living. There are 25 cottages, seven terraced houses, 25 assisted living units and 19 health care beds.
INDEPENDENT LIVING
COUNTRY COTTAGES
Designed in the Cape vernacular architecture in response to the 'Ou Skool' building, there is a choice of one or two bedroom units within a carefully landscaped garden setting. With their thick walls, tapered window reveals, exposed rafters, covered terraces and courtyard gardens with 'werf mure', the cottages offer charm and relaxed country living.
TERRACED HOUSING
Once the 'Ou Skool's' woodwork building, this wing has been converted to provide three 2-bedroom units and three 1-bedroom units. Each terraced house has its own terrace with north facing country views and they provide compact, convenient living at affordable prices.
ASSISTED LIVING
ASSISTED LIVING
Once the 'Ou Skool's' classroom block, a new wing has been added which encloses a courtyard garden around which 25 assisted living units are positioned. With close proximity to the health care facility and nursing assistance, and with their own library, living and dining room, these units provide a safe haven with inward living for those wanting a more manageable environment.
FACILITIES AND SECURITY
THE CLUB HOUSE
The 'Ou Skool saal' (hall) has been beautifully renovated and converted into the Club House. Napier Retirement Village life revolves around the Club House where residents gather for meals in a beautifully appointed Victorian dining room which opens out on to a large covered terrace with breathtaking views over the surrounding countryside.
Residents have the choice of relaxing in two lounges, one furnished as a television lounge and the other as a more formal library, with bridge tables and internet stations.
The Club House will accommodate the administration offices, kitchen, hairdresser and laundry. The kitchen will also provide and deliver meals to cottages if residents are in poor health and unable to come to the dining room. Catering for special functions can also be arranged.
A solar heated swimming pool with a small exercise room and change rooms is located just off the main terrace and is ideally suited for regular exercise and outdoor functions.
SECURITY
Napier has a remarkably low crime rate, which has made it such an attractive town for people wanting to escape the stress of living fearfully in larger, more saturated areas. However, included in the monthly levies, is the cost for a 24/7 security guard with back up and monitoring from a local security company. All residents will have remote panic buttons and for added peace of mind and convenience, a telephone intercom system between all homes and the security office, Health Care Centre and clubhouse. Wherever you are, you can enjoy 24 hour communication to all facilities.
HEALTH CARE CENTRE FOR ALL RESIDENTS
A professionally managed Health Care Centre offers a full range of nursing services covering a wide range of needs.
All units will have panic buttons connected to the nurses' station.
Four levels of health care will be available:
BASIC AVAILABILITY
24 hour nurse call availability.
LOW CARE
This includes 24hr nurse call availability, administration of medicines and general monitoring.
MEDIUM CARE
Includes 24hr nurse call availability, administration of medicines, daily carer assistance, daily visits by nursing personnel and general monitoring.
HIGH CARE
Residents will be accommodated in the health care centre where they will receive administration of medicines, daily carer assistance, daily visits by nursing personnel and a higher level of general monitoring. This facility will also be available for non residents and residents who may require short term recovery and require more focused assistance for a period of time.
The health care centre consists of four wards, designed as a self-contained living unit with a common dining and television area, while each bed is partitioned off to offer privacy. This provides a wonderful balance between privacy and daily social interaction.
The Trust has worked closely in collaboration with the existing old age home 'Huis Klippedrift', in an effort to pool resources and services, offering a broader choice of retirement options to residents of the town. The health care centre will be run on a non-profit basis while assuring the highest standard of care.
